Spain to fly about 6000 German tourists to Balearic Islands as a trial to boost tourism

Starting June 15, Spain will fly German tourists to wonderful beaches in a pilot program to revive tourism to its Balearic Islands.

According to the news reports, an official at the Spanish foreign ministry told an online news daily they are planning to allow a limited number of tourists to the Balearic Islands as an experiment.
Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca and Formentera form the beautiful Balearic Islands. A few tour operators have been given the permit to fly 6000 German tourists, who won’t be under an obligation to follow the two-week quarantine rule levied on all foreign visitors in Spain. Reportedly, 4000 tourists from Germany will visit Majorca, 1000 tourists will visit Menorca and none, for now, to Formentera.
Germany has been chosen the first partner for the pilot program by Spain due to its similar condition regarding the Coronavirus crisis.
So far, the Balearic Islands are under the same COVID-19 lockdown rules that brought life to standstill in Spain from mid-March. Only essential outdoor visits were allowed for the residents. It was only in May that Spain started easing its travel restriction, thus implementing a four-phase plan to start a new normal way of living. News has it that one out of every eight workers in Spain is employed in the tourism industry.

According to the report published in Spanish news daily, the Canary Islands are also planning to conduct a similar tourist test program. Yet, a final plan and safety norms to test all visitors are yet to come in place.
