Khangchendzonga National Park – Sikkim’s paradise in UNESCO list now

The Indian state of Sikkim is known for its natural beauty, and the Khangchendzonga National Park is just the right place to witness its biodiversity, and appreciate its beauty. One of the most important national parks in India, this is also a famous attraction in Sikkim. In fact, it also works as a path for trekkers, so if you plan to experience trekking in this part of India, you will get the chance to experience the Khangchendzonga National Park.
Now, the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve has been recently added to UNESCO’s list of World Network Biosphere Reserve (WNBR). Earlier, the Khangchendzonga National Park was inducted in UNESCO World Heritage Site list, under mixed criteria.

The Khangchendzonga National Park is definitely one of the main attractions of Sikkim, and if you get a chance, you must visit. The park was commissioned way back in August 1977; today, the park covers a total area of 1784 sq. km. The western part of the park runs with international boundaries of Nepal and China.
The biosphere reserve consists of magnificent flora and fauna, and is home to some rare and threatened varieties of plant and animal species. Also, it has one of the highest numbers of plant and mammal species. Here, you will find a number of lakes and 18 glaciers, including Zemu Glacier that is a whopping 26 km long! The reserve also has 17 high altitude lakes and 19 mountains and peaks. The most intriguing thing about this national park is that it is home to the third highest peak in the world, the magnificent Mt. Khangchendzonga. Safe to say that the this is nature’s true haven and anyone visiting here will definitely want to return for more.

This region finds the Himalayas in its narrowest; thereby has resulted in very steep terrain as well.
