A first-timer’s guide to Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep Islands are one of the least visited yet one of the most beautiful and serene places in India. There are a total of 36 islands, 12 atolls and three reefs. But only 10 of these islands are inhabited.

If you are looking for an offbeat holiday in a place most pristine and far from the hustle and bustle of the cities, head to Lakshadweep. Here’s a quick guide to the beautiful island destination.
The Union Territory
Lakshadweep is one of India’s eight Union Territories. It became a Union Territory in 1956.
Island destination
Only 10 out of the 36 islands are inhabited. Most popular destinations are Minicoy Island, Kalpeni Islands, Kadmat Islands, Bangaram Island, and Thinnakara Island.
How to reach Lakshadweep?
You can reach Lakshadweep only via Kochi. There are flights and ships to Lakshadweep from Kochi, Kerala. Air India operates flights to Lakshadweep six days a week.
Access to Lakshadweep
Entry to Lakshadweep is restricted, and requires a permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration, based in Kochi. To get the permit, you will first need to download a clearance certificate and get it cleared from your local police station (attach identification documents and three passport-size photos).
Head to Kochi
After the clearance certificate, you will need to download the entry permit or get it in person from the Lakshadweep Administration office, located in Willingdon Island, Kochi. Upon reaching Lakshadweep, you will be required to submit this entry permit to the station house officer in Lakshadweep.
Pack light
If you are flying, pack light. Aircrafts are small and they have limited capacity.
Sail to Lakshadweep
MV Kavaratti, MV Minicoy, MV Amindivi, MV Corals, MV Lagoon, MV Lakshadweep Sea, and MV Arabian Sea are the seven ships that go to Lakshadweep from Kochi.
