A day at London Zoo, world’s oldest scientific zoo

On a rainy London morning, we ventured into the enchanting world of London Zoo, located in the scenic Regent's Park. Established in 1828, this zoo isn't just a haven for animal lovers but a slice of history, being the world's oldest scientific zoo.


From the moment we entered, the zoo unfolded as a wonderland for our five-year-old. The first stop was the "Land of the Lions," where the majestic Asiatic lions, including playful cubs, captivated our little one's imagination. The exhibit, mirroring India's Gir Forest, felt like stepping into a wild, distant land.

We were fortunate enough to be able to get tickets to a ‘Meet the Meerkats Experience’ which enabled us to enter their habitat while they played around us and we fed them. This is one of numerous such experiences that the zoo offers throughout the day. Be prepared and book these in advance.


Next, we visited the "Gorilla Kingdom," where the troop of western lowland gorillas, including some adorable newborns, showcased their calm majesty. It was a treat to watch them in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat.
"Penguin Beach" was a hit, with England’s largest penguin pool providing endless entertainment through the lively antics of the penguins, especially during the feeding shows. The canopy of "Rainforest Life" buzzed overhead with monkeys and exotic birds, offering a slice of the tropics and thrilling our young explorer with its lush, mysterious vibes.


"Monkey Valley" introduced us to the black-and-white colobus monkeys, leaping and lounging in their aviary paradise. The setup, complete with artificial cliffs and water features, made it feel like we were on an adventurous expedition.

Our mini-safari through "Into Africa" brought us face-to-face with giraffes, zebras, and pygmy hippos, sparking a dozen questions from our curious five-year-old about each animal. "Butterfly Paradise" offered a magical stroll through a garden where colourful butterflies fluttered freely around us, creating a gentle, mesmerizing experience.

We couldn't miss the "Giants of the Galápagos," where ancient tortoises moved with a slow, deliberate grace that fascinated our child. And then there was the "Tiny Giants" exhibit, which revealed the hidden world of minuscule beasts like coral and spiders, highlighting the zoo's blend of education with wonder.
Throughout our visit, the zoo's commitment to conservation was evident, not just in protecting endangered species but in inspiring the next generation of wildlife champions.

Easy to reach by public transport and packed with diverse attractions, London Zoo proved to be the perfect educational adventure for our family, blending fun with fascinating insights into the natural world.
