Castel Santangelo takes its name from the vision of Archangel Michael that Pope Gregory the Great had in the 6th century, while he had been leading a procession across the bridge, praying for the end of the plague. The Castle was inaugurated in 139 AD as Emperor Adrian’s mausoleum. Since then, it has been used as a citadel, a prison, and even a place of safety for popes during times of political unrest. There is a corridor that links Castel Sant’Angelo with the Vatican Palace, thus providing an escape route for the pope. The annexed museum covers all aspects of the history of the castle, which includes paintings, sculptures, military memorabilia and medieval firearms. Nowadays, the Castle is one of Rome’s landmarks.
