8 largest castles in the world; this Indian castle is also on the list
Identifying the world's largest castle isn't as simple as it seems. The definition of a castle, often described as a defensive residence for a ruler or noble, can be ambiguous. While the Moscow Kremlin is widely accepted as not being a castle, the classification of fortresses in India and Japan remains uncertain.
Furthermore, determining the largest castle involves considering the measure of size and the criteria for such assessments. The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes Prague Castle as the most extensive castle complex, whereas Wikipedia designates Windsor Castle as the largest inhabited castle.
Malbork Castle
Situated in Poland, Malbork Castle holds the distinction of being the largest castle globally. Founded in 1274 by the Teutonic Knights, it served as their headquarters for countering Polish adversaries and governing their northern Baltic territories. The castle underwent multiple expansions to accommodate the increasing number of Knights until their relocation to Königsburg in 1466.
Mehrangarh Fort
Initially acknowledged as a fortress, Mehrangarh Fort is reminiscent of an Indian castle. Situated atop a hill standing at a height of 122 m, the fort features walls that are 36 m high and 21 m wide, accessible through seven gates. Originally built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, the fort predominantly showcases 17th-century architectural styles.
Prague Castle
Recognised as one of the largest castles globally, according to the Guinness Book of Records, Prague Castle has its roots dating back to the 9th century. This castle has undergone various expansions until the latter half of the 18th century, whereas its compound includes prominent structures like St. Vitus Cathedral and St. George’s Basilica.
Windsor Castle
Often hailed as the largest inhabited castle globally, Windsor Castle holds the title of the largest castle in England. Serving as one of Queen Elizabeth II's official residences, she frequents the castle for state affairs and private engagements throughout many weekends each year.
Hohensalzburg Castle
Positioned in the Austrian city of Salzburg, Hohensalzburg Castle ranks among Europe's largest and best-preserved castles. Originating in 1077, it underwent significant enlargement between 1495 and 1519, ultimately reaching its current proportions.
Spis Castle
Situated in the eastern region of Slovakia, Spis Castle is among the largest medieval castles in Central Europe. Fortified in the early 13th century with stone walls, and vast lower courtyard in the mid-15th century, the castle provides a scenic setting, which has been used in films like Dragonheart (1996) and The Last Legion (2006).
Buda Castle
Situated on Castle Hill in Budapest, Hungary, Buda Castle saw initial fortification in the 13th century as a response to a Mongol attack. Presently showcasing a mix of architectural styles from Gothic to Baroque, the castle reflects a history of invasions followed by rebuilding in the prevalent styles of each period.
Himeji Castle
Regarded as Japan’s most beautiful castle, Himeji Castle has withstood the challenges of civil wars, earthquakes, and bombings. The castle complex, completed in 1609, evolved from a 14th-century fort on its current site and has retained its architectural splendor.
