6 tourist traps that are so bad, they’re actually good
We all know them—the overpriced, overcrowded, cliché-filled tourist traps that every travel guide warns you about. The ones where you pay way too much for a ticket, stand in an absurdly long line, and leave wondering, Was that really worth it?
But here’s the thing: some tourist traps are so outrageously bad, they loop back around to being amazing. Whether it’s sheer spectacle, ridiculous kitsch, or just the “I can’t believe I’m here” factor, these places turn cheesy into charming.
Stonehenge, UK
People love to complain that Stonehenge is just a pile of rocks. But guess what? They’re REALLY OLD ROCKS, arranged in a way that no one quite understands. Is it an ancient calendar? A landing pad for aliens? Who knows! Sure, you can’t get that close, and yes, it’s just off a busy road, but there’s something undeniably cool about standing near 5,000 years of mystery.
So bad, it’s good because: You get to debate wild conspiracy theories while standing in front of history’s most famous rock collection.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
The Leaning Tower of Pisa should be a disaster. It’s a poorly built tower that started tilting almost immediately after construction. And yet, here we are—millions of tourists flocking to this accidental architectural fail, striking the world’s most overused “I’m holding up the tower” pose.
So bad, it’s good because: It’s living proof that sometimes mistakes make for the best attractions. Also, the absurdity of watching 200 people pretend to push it at the same time? Priceless.
Las Vegas, USA
A city with a fake Eiffel Tower, a fake Venetian canal, and hotels so extra they have erupting volcanoes? Las Vegas is peak tourist trap energy—and that’s exactly why it works. The neon lights, the ridiculous themed hotels, the buffets where you can eat enough to regret it for weeks—it’s so over-the-top, you just have to embrace the chaos.
So bad, it’s good because: No other place on Earth lets you see the Statue of Liberty, an Egyptian pyramid, and Elvis impersonators all within a five-minute walk.
Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Angeles
Yes, it’s a sidewalk. Yes, it’s full of questionable street performers and overpriced souvenirs. But it’s Hollywood! You’ll spot names of legends, maybe catch a glimpse of a celebrity (or someone who just really looks like one), and enjoy the bizarre energy of people desperately chasing fame.
So bad, it’s good because: Where else can you step over Marilyn Monroe’s name while dodging a guy dressed as Spider-Man?
Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Australia
Bondi Beach is hyped as Australia’s ultimate beach experience, but it’s also packed with tourists, overpriced cafes, and more selfie sticks than actual surfers. Still, there’s something magical about watching surfboards slicing through waves and enjoying some of the best people-watching on the planet.
So bad, it’s good because: The chaos is part of the fun, and you might just catch an epic wipeout.
Times Square, USA
It’s bright. It’s loud. It’s literally just massive billboards screaming at you. Yet, for some reason, standing in the middle of Times Square feels like you’ve been dropped into the center of the universe. Even if you roll your eyes at the flashing ads, you can’t help but soak in the electric energy.
So bad, it’s good because: It’s the most over-the-top, capitalistic spectacle ever, and somehow, it works.
