6 legendary Maratha forts in Maharashtra you should visit
Maharashtra is home to some of India's most formidable forts, standing as symbols of the Maratha Empire's valor, strategic prowess, and architectural brilliance. Built across rugged hilltops and along the coastline, these forts played a crucial role in shaping India's history, serving as strongholds during battles, administrative centers, and military outposts. Many of them are closely linked to the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who established the Maratha kingdom and fortified these structures to resist foreign invasions. Here are five of the most iconic Maratha forts in Maharashtra that every history and adventure enthusiast should explore.
Raigad Fort
Nestled in the Sahyadri mountains, Raigad Fort was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s empire and the site of his coronation as the first Chhatrapati of the Maratha kingdom in 1674. The grand Maha Darwaja serves as the fort’s imposing entrance, leading visitors into an expansive complex with remnants of palaces, granaries, and watchtowers. A major highlight is the Samadhi (memorial) of Shivaji Maharaj.
Lohagad Fort
Lohagad Fort, meaning the "Iron Fort," is a stunning hill fort near Lonavala and is famous for its well-preserved Bastions and Vinchu Kata (Scorpion’s Tail Ridge). This fort was used by Shivaji Maharaj to store loot from Surat and later served as a key stronghold. The fort’s stairways, ancient doors, and panoramic views of the Pawna Lake make it a favorite among trekkers and history lovers alike.
Sinhagad Fort
Sinhagad Fort, located near Pune, is famous for the historic Battle of Sinhagad (1670), where Tanaji Malusare sacrificed his life to recapture the fort for the Marathas. His bravery led to Shivaji Maharaj’s famous words, "Gad aala pan Sinha gela" (We won the fort, but lost the lion). Today, the fort is a popular trekking destination offering stunning panoramic views, cool mountain air, and remnants of its glorious past.
Pratapgad Fort
Situated in the Satara district, Pratapgad Fort is best known for the decisive battle between Shivaji Maharaj and the Mughal general Afzal Khan in 1659. The fort features towering stone walls, hidden chambers, and a grand statue of Shivaji Maharaj. Pratapgad’s strategic location offers mesmerizing views of the Western Ghats, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Shivneri Fort
Shivneri Fort, located near Junnar in Pune district, is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This well-preserved fort is an important historical landmark, with its seven mighty gates, water tanks, and temples reflecting the Maratha era’s architectural brilliance. The fort also houses a small temple dedicated to Goddess Shivai, after whom Shivaji Maharaj was named.
Sindhudurg Fort
Unlike the hill forts of the Sahyadris, Sindhudurg Fort is a unique sea fort built by Shivaji Maharaj on an island off the Konkan coast in 1664. It was constructed to safeguard the Maratha navy and protect the coastline from foreign invasions. The fort’s architecture showcases Shivaji’s military foresight, with hidden entrances, strong bastions, and secret escape routes. The fort offers spectacular views of the Arabian Sea.
