If you are looking for a unique forest experience in Jim Corbett National Park, you have come to the right place. The park’s Vatanvasa Gate provides access to the Sonanadi Zone, a prime region within the Corbett Tiger Reserve, famous for its rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. What makes this area unique is the fact that this is the only part of Jim Corbett National Park where visitors can explore on foot.
Walking safaris are allowed in this area does NOT, however, mean that visitors can go off track. It’s always a guided tour of the forest, and you better follow all the rules and regulations of the land because this area is also home to several species of snakes.


Sonanadi, the "river of gold," gets its name from the river that flows through it. Interestingly, the river has a very interesting past. Before becoming a part of the sanctuary, and thus a protected area, the river sand was known to contain gold. The Sonanadi area became a part of the Corbett Tiger Reserve and Project Tiger in 1991. It also came under Project Elephant.


When you visit Sonanadi’s forests, you will see dense sal trees and vibrant bamboo clusters all around. This is a well known habitat of the Asiatic elephants and a wide array of mammals, including tigers, cheetal, sambhar, leopards, and reptiles.

Sonanadi is also a very popular birding destination. Jim Corbett National Park, as a whole, is home for over 500 species of birds, some of which are migratory in nature.


Every year, Sonanadi Zone opens for safaris from October 15 to June 30. Monsoon season is when the zone is closed for all tourism purposes. Those who are planning to go for safaris, must pre-book their safari tickets.

We believe that the best way to experience a national park is by staying inside the forest, at one of the many Forest Rest Houses (FRHs). For those planning to visit Sonanadi Zone, there are Halduparao FRH, Lohachaur, Rathuadhab, and Mundiyapani FRHs. However, it is also important to note that it is very difficult to get a room at the FRHs. So do book in advance. Forest Rest Houses like Mundiyapani, Rathuadhar, and Kanda are located closer to the Vatanvasa Gate.
