5 of the world’s costliest projects that now lie abandoned!

Numerous ambitious projects had been initiated across the globe with grand visions and immense financial backing. However, it’s disappointing to note that not all of these endeavors reached completion, and saw the light of the day. While some were abandoned, leaving behind staggering costs and unfinished legacies, others have been shrouded with mystery. Here are some of the world’s most expensive abandoned projects that might prompt you to think twice about what goes behind in developing certain tourist attractions.

One of the most iconic abandoned structures is the Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea. This 105-story pyramid-shaped skyscraper was intended to be a symbol of the country’s prosperity. Construction began in 1987, but due to economic hardships and political instability, the project was halted in 1992, leaving a hollow shell. It’s estimated that more than $750 million had been spent before construction ceased, making it one of the most expensive unfinished buildings in the world.

Ciudad Real Central Airport, located in central Spain, was supposed to become a major international gateway. Opened in 2009, it was abandoned just three years later due to low passenger numbers and financial losses. The project had cost nearly $1.3 billion and is now a symbol of the over-ambitious infrastructure projects that plagued Spain during the economic crisis.

Once a bustling mining community, Hashima Island, also known as Battleship Island, was abandoned in 1974 after the coal mines were depleted. The project to sustain the community had required immense financial resources. Today, the island, which has been largely left untouched since its abandonment, serves as a haunting reminder of industrial decline.

The Mirny Diamond Mine in Siberia was one of the largest man-made excavations in the world. Initially, the mine was a major source of diamonds for the Soviet Union. However, by the early 2000s, the open-pit mine was no longer economically viable and was abandoned. The project had consumed billions of dollars over the decades, and the massive hole remains a stark reminder of the Soviet Union’s ambitions.

The World Islands in Dubai was an ambitious project to create a series of artificial islands shaped like a map of the world. Despite the initial investment of $14 billion, the project stalled during the 2008 financial crisis. While some islands were sold, most remain undeveloped, and the entire project is largely abandoned. The once-promising real estate venture now stands as a costly symbol of overreach.
