Supposedly, the largest brick church in Europe and Poland’s largest church, St Mary’s Basilica is massive. Rising 33 metres in height and featuring a tower that soars as high as 82 metres, it is unmissable. Built over many centuries, the Gothic church is surprisingly bright and reflects a mix of styles inside. The high altar is Gothic, the ambone is Baroque and the baptistery is made of stone with exquisite carvings. There are also St George and St Balthazar chapels. However, the main attraction is the gigantic 14-metre astronomical clock which is also the largest wooden clock in the world. Extremely complex, it shows time, date, moon phase, position of sun and moon with relation to zodiac signs, as well as a calendar of saints. Once every hour, the clock is rung by Adam and Eve; and at noon, a procession appears featuring the Apostles, the Three Kings and even Death.
