The Djoser Step Pyramid, situated in Egypt's Saqqara necropolis, is one of the most important architectural milestones in ancient history. As Egypt's oldest pyramid, it is considered the first large-scale stone structure ever created. Built for Pharaoh Djoser, the founder of the Third Dynasty, it was designed by his chief architect, Imhotep.

The Djoser Step Pyramid of Saqqara was a monumental achievement that set the stage for the grand pyramid complexes we know today. As the world’s oldest pyramid, it represents a turning point in both architectural design and religious symbolism in ancient Egypt.

Pharaoh Djoser ruled Egypt during a time of great innovation and state-building. His reign was characterised by a series of construction projects and advancements in architecture and engineering. The Step Pyramid was commissioned to serve as his burial tomb, reflecting the belief in the afterlife and the importance of ensuring the king’s safe passage to the next world.



The pyramid’s design was a radical departure from earlier burial structures. Before Djoser’s reign, pharaohs and nobles were buried in mastabas—flat-roofed, rectangular tombs made of mudbrick. Imhotep’s design stacked six mastabas of decreasing size on top of each other, creating a stepped structure that rose to a height of about 60 metres. This innovative design laid the groundwork for the smooth-sided pyramids that would follow in later dynasties. The pyramid’s design not only influenced later pyramids but also established Imhotep as one of history’s first known architects.


The pyramid complex was designed to reflect the Egyptian cosmological view, symbolising the king’s journey to join the gods in the afterlife.

The pyramid’s ascending levels were thought to represent a staircase, allowing Djoser to climb toward the heavens and join the gods. This concept of the pyramid as a means of ascent became a core feature of later pyramid structures.
