Rolling hills in all shades of green, tiny villages and towns with honey-coloured houses, acres of vineyards and olive groves, pristine beaches alongside the azure sea – no, we are not talking about Tuscany, but about its neighbour, Le Marche. Flanked by the Adriatic Sea on the east, Le Marche lies in central Italy and is bordered by the regions of Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria and Abruzzo. This is where the Italians go on holiday. Perhaps they want to keep it a secret, which should explain why it’s not a very well known tourist destination! If you have already visited the ‘grand tour’ cities of Rome, Venice and Florence, or ‘done’ the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre, it may be worthwhile exploring a less touristy part of Italy. Even if it’s your first time in the country, get off the beaten track and discover an Italy that will charm you, and surprise you, in equal measures.
