Pioneers of tandoori cuisine

: The traditional butter chicken is a perennial favourite.

Talk of the town: Following a rift in the family, some members branched off to form Moti Mahal Deluxe, which has several branches in Delhi. They're good, but not a patch on the original.

Moti Mahal has been a Delhi foodie fixture since Partitan in 1947, when its founder arrived in the city from Pakistan. For authentic, homely north Indian food, the restaurant remains one of the city's favourites.

The main specialities remain traditional and are very much tried and tested - alongside the famous butter chicken, popular dishes include rogan josh, dal makhni and shahi paneer (like a cooked cottage cheese), accompanied by lip-smacking naan bread and rice. Join the throngs of Punjabi families and get stuck in with your fingers.
