Doomimal wears the epithet of ‘India’s Oldest Art Gallery’ with aplomb. Sporting photographs of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with its founder, Ram Babu Jain, Dhoomimal has a point to drive home. Since 1936, it has been performing the task of promoting and championing the cause of India’s Contemporary Art. Situated in Connaught Place, a commercial area that is no longer well afforded by any new gallery wanting to show off its collection, the gallery started all these decades ago with the works of Sailoz Mukherjea and Jamini Roy to name a few, at that time struggling artists, today, towering personas of Indian Art.
The gallery has one of the most enviable art collections ranging from FN Souza, J Swaminathan, HA Gade, Bimal Das Gupta, Jamini Roy, Anjolie Ela Menon, Krishen Khanna, among others. The gallery is today managed by Uday Jain and his mother, Uma Jain.
The Dhoomimal Art Complex is situated at G-42 Connaught Circus in a 5000 square feet space that includes Ravi Jain Centre for International Arts, a sculpture court, an art museum. A cultural centre was also opened in 2003.
