The capital city boasts a dry deciduous forestland called Delhi Ridge that is the northern extension of the Aravalli Range. Rightly called the lungs of Delhi, it protects the city from the hot winds of Rajasthan’s desert owing to its greenery. The Ridge comprises four parts—Northern Ridge, Central Ridge, South Central Ridge and Southern Ridge. The Northern Ridge is the hilly area near Delhi University while the Central Ridge stretches from south of Sadar Bazaar to Dhaula Kuan. The South Central Ridge encompasses the area near JNU and Vasant Kunj while the Southern Ridge covers the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. A walk in these areas provides ample opportunities for birding. The area is inhabited by more than 100 avian species. One can not only watch resident birds such as babbler, mynah, bulbul, weavers and sunbirds but also migratory birds such as pintail, Brahminy duck, common teal, shoveller and white-eyed pochard.
