A charming treasure trove tracing India's crafts heritage
Set aside plenty of time to get under the skin of this engaging museum. Designed by Charles Correa - one of India's best-loved, post-Independence architects - the museum is a shady oasis in the city that incorporates 22,000 tribal objects and a four acre village complex complete with traditional mud huts, courtyards, and shrines.
The objects inside range from modest terracotta figurines, toys, tribal paintings, jewellery and textiles, to a full-sized 18th century Gujarati balcony. The artifacts are from all across India and trace the enormous range of artisanal work from this vast country. There are also award-winning craftsmen in residence who give live demonstrations.
