San Jose has enough and more to keep you glued for 12 months in a year. But what a shame if you are in Costa Rica and never get out of the capital city, because weekend getaways in Costa Rica screams to be explored, hiked and discovered. With excellent roads and pit stops, the drive will be more fun than you can imagine. Buses take you to major tourist destinations from the Coco Coal bus station (the main bus station of San Jose, Costa Rica) which is in downtown San Jose. Take your pick, between a national park, Pacific beach, the Caribbean, a volcano hike, and a hundred things to do in between. Owing to San Jose's central location, the weekend destinations are easily accessible via the Pan American Highway that runs through the country. These places are mostly connected by roads, accessible with cars, taxis, and buses. Be known that as strange as it sounds, Costa Rica doesn't have a formal address structure, hence looking for a place is as old-school as 'take the third right, after two traffic signals you will see a mango tree, turn left past the yellow house,’ you get the drift. If you are new to the place, carry a GPS and avoid driving at nights. Nevertheless, asking for routes is a time tested way to make more friends in a strange country. So ask away your hearts content, and enjoy the very emphatic, detailed responses to your query.
Remember to say thanks by saying 'Pura Vida Mae,' a very popular and common local salutation meaning 'Pure Life, my friend.'
