This active volcano has witnessed some minor eruptions in the past few years since the major eruption in 1965. The barren landscape would remind you of Leh or Ladhak, sans the snow and cold. On a bright sunny day, you will see a thick blanket of clouds much below the level you are at. The lake formation in the crater is due to rainfall. The water keeps changing its colours depending on what minerals and gases is the crater emitting then. The water changes its colour from green to blue to red in a matter of months. Crater Principal, crater Diego de la Haya, and Mirador San Juan de Chicua are the three major pit stops on the trail that are very flat and requires no prior level of expertise in hiking. Volcan Irazu is one of those experiences that one can have with family on a lazy weekend.
