Chittorgarh

The capital of the state of Mewar before Udaipur, Chittorgarh is defined by its imposing 700 acre fort. It has an especially tragic history, having been witness to some of the bloodiest battles in the medieval era. The fort was attacked by powerful enemies thrice, each of which resulted in the deaths of many soldiers, while the women and children committed jauhar or self-immolation.

Get ready for a history lesson as you are guided through numerous palaces and temples including Rana Kumbha’s Palace, Zenana Mehal, Rani Padmini’s palace, Shanti Nath Temple and Kumbhashyam Temple. The awe-inspiring nine storey high pillar, Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory), built by Rana Kumbha to celebrate his victory over Malwa; and the temple of the mystic saint and poetess Meerabai, are especially memorable. These can all be seen in half-a-day, with the help of a guide and auto rickshaw.
