Matoom Art Space is the gallery of Thai artist Chumpol Taksapornchai, known to friends as Khun Tua. It is a great example of what a local Thai gallery can really be. Extremely inviting, the gallery features some of Khun Tua’s latest work on constant rotation. The artist creates likeable paintings with themes of Buddhism running through them. His fantastical characters are painted in a soft style that works for large-scale canvas pieces, as well as more marketable items like postcards and gift tags. This winning combination makes his work accessible to a larger audience than most local artists. He’s amassed a significant international following over the years, with clients from Australia, Japan, and Europe.

For the past decade, he’s been working out of this studio. In addition to being his personal work area, Matoom Art Space has gained recognition for holding strong exhibitions of work by other local artists—often those working with conceptual or culturally-relevant ideas. And while Khun Tua sells work to collectors worldwide, he enjoys staying in Chiang Mai because of its supportive and easy atmosphere. The artist and his family are incredibly welcoming to new faces and old.
