Situated in the beautiful northern Thai hills, Chiang Mai is not only an interesting destination itself but an excellent jumping off point to explore northern Thailand. Travellers can get out of the centre of town and into nature in just 30 minutes―perfect for day trips that offer a quick break from the city. Many tour companies will offer package tours for the day trip listed below, but it’s also easy to rent a driver, car or motorbike to explore more on your own time. For many of the places, getting there is half the fun! After enjoying Chiang Mai to the best, you can go on these day trips that will have you loving the Rose of the North even more.
Located about three hours away, you should really spend more than a day in the city of Chiang Rai, but if you’re pressed for time you can still quickly see some of the region’s main highlights.
There’s something magical about riding a motorbike in the mountains with the wind caressing your hair―it’s exhilarating and relaxing at the same time.
At 2565 m, Doi Inthanon is the tallest mountain in Thailand and home to a large national park filled with waterfalls, campsites, trails, caves and more.
Outside of the city of Chiang Mai you’ll find several Royal Project Sites where Thailand’s Royal Family has instituted various agricultural and community support programs.
