Probably Chiang Mai’s most well-known market, the Sunday Walking Street runs every Sunday evening going late into the night. Starting at Tha Pae Gate with street stalls and a food court then running the length of Ratchadamnoen Road until Wat Phra Singh temple—about 1.5 km in total— with smaller side streets and food stall clusters branching out from the main road, the market is huge! While it’s a night market, the stalls operating at Tha Pae Road actually set up in the morning and are open all day. Stalls along Ratchadamnoen Road usually start opening around 4:00-4:30 and by 5:30 pm things are well underway with foreign tourists and locals flocking to the market to shop and snack the evening away. The great thing about this market is that is has a little something for everyone— souvenirs, local art and handicrafts, tasty food…even areas set up for foot massages! Since it’s so popular, however, it does get crowded, especially during Thailand’s high season, and you may find yourself slowly inching your way through the market in a sea of people. It’s worth it though—just grab a fruit shake and keep moving!
