In the northwest corner of Plaza de Mayo, this 19th century cathedral stands severe and striking on the ground of the original colonial church designated in 1580. In the northwest corner of Plaza de Mayo, this 19th century cathedral stands severe and striking on the ground of the original colonial church designated in 1580. With its 12 Hellenic columns (representing the 12 apostles), Renaissance blue-tiled dome and biblical bas-reliefs, like so many cathedrals, it is an amalgamation of many eras and styles, right down to the graffiti frequently sprayed on the outer walls.
Although perhaps not the prettiest of cathedrals in the city, it is an important landmark. An eternal flame burns outside in honour of General Jose de San Martin – his elaborate marble mausoleum is inside – who was a hero of the independence and founding father.
The interiors are more impressive. Walk through the sombre and cool chambers, and admire the Venetian mosaic tiles and statue of Christ carved from the wood of a carob tree.
