Word to the wise: Even on the most sultry French Riveria day, the cathedral enforces a strict dress code: no shorts, sleeveless shirts or mini-skirts.

In a city that is in no short supply of churches, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd and the Cathédrale Saint Nicolas manages just that. The largest Russian Orthodox cathedral outside of Russia, Saint Nicholas is also considered a French National Monument and this exceptional example of Russian architecture cuts a fine figure in its semi-suburban location.
Inaugurated in December 1912 with the generous backing of Tsar Nicholas II, the cathedral was built to serve the large Russian community who made Nice their home in the latter part of the 19th century. Five highly ornate, onion-shaped domes grab your attention from a distance while equally resplendent icons and frescoes maintain your gaze on the interior. The cathedral is open to visitors daily; closing for Sunday morning mass.
