Mosque of Ibn Tulun is the third largest mosque in the world. It is also the oldest surviving mosque in the city, maintaining its original form. The mosque was commissioned in 876 AD, which makes it older than the city of Cairo! This mud brick monument is quite simple and different from other monuments around the town. The main feature of this mosque is its spiral minaret standing on a square platform, which is quite unique. The interior of the mosque is decorated with stucco and wood work is done in Samarran style. The Mosque of Ibn Tulun and adjacent Gayer Anderson Museum were featured in famous James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me! Stroll around the quiet compounds of this oldest surviving mosque and soak in the diversity of Islamic architecture.
