No trip to Budapest is complete without eating Hungarian Gulyas, what we call Goulash! This classic dish is a stew made of beef or any meat and vegetables spiced with paprika, garlic and bay leaf. Thick goulash was originally a winter dish and was consumed by Magyar shepherds during their journeys. It has now become a popular meal and is viewed a s a National dish of Hungary! Classic Goulash is made with beef or pork and it is a full meal in itself. Paprika is the main ingredient and gives it delicious flavour and appetising red colour. Goulash is ubiquitous in Hungary and can be eaten at a roadside cafe or in a fine dining restaurant. For vegetarians, the same stew is prepared without the meat and it is famously called Fake Goulash! For the adventurous kind, gulp down these sumptuous platters with shots of Palinka (fruit brandy), known to be a killer drink. You can also take cooking lessons and learn how to make popular Hungarian dishes like Classic Goulash, Bean Goulash, Chicken paprikash and Porkolt. The Hungarian cuisine is on spicier side, unlike the rest of Europe. This makes it extra delicious for us Indians who are used to liberal dose of spice.
