Parcul Circul de Stat

SIGHTSEEING, BUCHAREST Updated : Dec 16, 2015, 02.34 PM IST

Parcul Circul de Stat Parcul Circul de Stat is known for its two main attractions―the performance hall, from which it has taken its name, roughly translating into “State Circus Park,” and the natural lake.

It is actually the water reservoir that was the beginning of everything and was declared a natural monument in as early as 1931. In fact, this small round lake is of natural origin and it's quite peculiar for the Romanian environment since the “ Nymphea lotus” that happens to be quite a rare plant in Romania, grows here. The lake and its surroundings also give shelter to several amphibian and reptile species, of which, the small turtles swimming in the water are a particular favorite of younger visitors. The park, covering 26 hectares, was created in 1961 and was recently restored, with a brand new nocturnal illumination and 20,000 planted trees.

What we enjoyed the most were the wooden sculptures realized directly into the tree trunks, an artistic touch to a natural environment. The second attraction of the park is the auditorium, nowadays called Globus Circus, built in reinforced concrete with quite a distinctive shape. It’s circular and undulated roof with a diameter of 60m, resembles a shell and it's suspended over 16 pillars, enclosed by glass panels. Parcul Circul de Stat can be reached on foot from the metro station “Stefan Cel Mare”.
