The beautifully maintained gardens belonging to the 13th century Abbaye de la Cambre lie just minutes from the hustle and bustle of both Place Flagey and Avenue Louise. Created in the 17th century and restored in the 1930s, the French-style terraced and walled gardens are open to the public, unlike the main abbey buildings, and provide a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of the city.
Climb to the top of the terraced esplanade for the best view of the gardens, which boast Gent azaleas and rhododendrons in spring, roses during the summer and neat hedges, lush lawns and stately trees all year round. Do as the locals do and bring a picnic.
