A unique area in the south of Hockley area of the city centre, Jewellery Quarter is a hub for jewellers. With a population of around 6000, this part of the city has the largest concentration of businesses centred around gems and jewellery. While it still accounts for about 40% of all jewellery made in the UK, this area employed about 30,000 people during the peak of the industrial revolution. Recognising the historical importance and significance of this place, a large number of heritage buildings have been restored here and are a popular tourist attraction. Housing the last standing Georgian Square in the serene surroundings of St Paul’s, this area is not to be missed while in the city.
Apart from the rich legacy, it is still a thriving hub of creative businesses and houses many firms involved in manufacturing, polishing, plating and repairing jewellery. In fact, the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million pieces a year, is situated here. Do not forget to visit the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter where you can step back in time and see the development that this historic place has been through over the past 200 years till today.
