798 Art District or Dashanzi Art District is a destination for contemporary art lovers. Named after the number of the building, this vast area was an unused factory space which got converted into an art district in a short period. There are large spaces, ideal for multimedia installations and themed galleries. Initially occupied by struggling contemporary artists, the area is now buzzing with some of the well-known art galleries, design studios, exhibition spaces, bookshops, boutiques, restaurants and bars. It has an art campus feel where the streets are lined with wacky sculptures and impressive graffiti. Dashanzi Art District is abuzz with art aficionados, artists and art lovers over the weekend. Some of the must-visit galleries and exhibition spaces are Galleria Continua, BTAP, Long March Space, UCCA and Pace. Stroll around leisurely on the well-marked streets of the art district and feel free spirited and rejuvenated with a liberal dose of contemporary art. Avoid visiting the district on Monday as most of the art galleries are closed on this day.
