Barcelona to increase its tourist tax from April

The region of Catalonia is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. The capital city of Barcelona, especially, is a destination known for its rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and beautiful beaches. It is safe to say that Barcelona is a place you will never forget once you have experienced it.
The Barcelona city authorities have recently announced that from April 1, 2023, onwards, the city will increase its tourist tax for all visitors visiting the city.


For those who are not aware, a lot of destinations across the world charge regional as well as city-wide taxes, Barcelona included. In Barcelona, this rule has been in place since 2012, and there will be an increase in these taxes now.
All visitors will now have to pay an increase of €2.75 in the municipal fee starting from April 1. This increase is for this year only. From next year April 1, the fee will be increased to €3.25. It is important to note that the surcharge is only levied on official tourist lodging (in the main districts).


As per the city administration, this increase in the tourist tax is being introduced mainly to control the number of tourists in the city and more importantly, to give the visitors a quality experience.

Barcelona, like any other popular tourist destinations across the world, suffers from overtourism. This surcharge is an effort to help the city administration to maintain its infrastructure and improve roads, city transport services and escalators.
