Moving around in a foreign city, where you don’t know the language or one direction from the other, can be challenging to say the least. But in Bangkok it’s the opposite. You have several great options—the skytrain (BTS), the underground tube system (MRT) and taxis are super for movement within the city, while river taxis and express boats are the best way to ferry yourself from the city to its neighbouring historic sites. The skytrain is easily your best bet. It will reduce your travel time by more than half, it’s well connected, and can be a boon during rush hour. For all those spots which are not covered by the skytrain, the underground MTR is a newer and equally cheap and efficient mode of transport. Taxis are available for a dime a dozen, and though you might have to haggle with the driver to use the metre, they’re still a pretty good way to move around, especially once it’s dark. When you want to head out of the city and sightsee your way through the surrounding neighbourhoods, a river taxi or express boat is your best bet. Not only are they cheap, the experience is authentically Thai, and unlike anything you’re used to.
