Chinatown & Phahurat

Chinatown & Phahurat
Vibrant ethnic communities bursting with colour

Noteworthy for: The less formal markets of Phahurat are the real draw: pick up sarongs, batiks, and Bollywood-style textiles and accessories here.

Word to the wise: Yes, it's a big hit with the locals, but it's worth considering the ecological effects of tucking into a traditional shark fin soup in Chinatown.

Located in the west of Bangkok but just east of the Chao Phraya River, Chinatown (or Yaowarat) is an exotic, frenetic labyrinth of streets and alleys bursting with stores, trading warehouses, and—most importantly—terrific places to eat. Chinese merchants settled here in the 1780s and the area still retains a sizeable ethnic community—by day, locals scour authentic markets and shops for diverse items, but come evening, the neon lights switch on and street food vendors hawk their delectable wares along Thanon Yaowarat.

Neighbouring Phahurat (or Little India) is an equally vibrant enclave, but unlike its Chinese counterpart, this area practically shuts down after dark, so plan your visit during the daytime. Crowned by the golden-domed Sri Guru Singh Sabha Temple, Phahurat's shopping options are endless with the sprawling Sampeng Market, Fabrics Market, the colonial-style Old Siam Plaza, and the newer India Emporium all within walking distance.
