The Pura Luhar are Bali’s ‘high temples’ – the most important and sacred places on the island. Uluwatu is one of the oldest Pura Luhars in Bali, and is perched on a cliff-top at the island’s most south-westerly point. Built to protect the island from the evil spirits of the ocean, the temple is set over a 250 foot cliff and has tumultuous waters beneath. It’s possible — and highly recommended — to watch the sunset from the temple. Do not miss the traditional Kecak dance performances that are held at around 5 pm every day. There’s also a lively babble of monkeys roaming around the temple complex — they’re interesting to look at, but keep your sunglasses in your pocket and a tight grip on your camera.
