Austria, Australia, what’s in a name?

A viral meme has been making rounds of all social media platforms, and making headlines for sure. The meme says: “If you are having a bad day, just remember that the Salzburg Airport has a counter for people who flew to Austria instead of Australia”. The internet is divided with some believing this to be true, and some who are calling it out for what it is – a joke.


Yes, people, before you start typing #Prayfor…this is not true. There is no counter, dedicated or otherwise, at the Salzburg Airport for distraught passengers, who are now cold instead of feeling the sunny land Down Under. No one is mistaking Austria for Australia.

Although this is not true, sadly this is not an uncommon error. Believe it or not, there have been such mistakes in the past and there will be more in future. Do you know how? Not many people pay attention while booking tickets. And auto-correct features on our devices are running their own game. It’s not impossible to write Austria instead of Australia. It’s only a matter of two alphabets, after all.



We are not the only ones to make such errors. Look at Christopher Columbus! He set out on his voyage to look for new routes to India, China, Japan and other places in the Far East, and landed in the Indies in the Americas.

However, the entire blame can’t go to the person booking the flights. When the world is full of places with similar names, it’s easy to mix things up. Speaking of similar names, did you know that there is another Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada? How about Saint Petersburg in Florida? And the more popular one – Memphis. Can you tell whether this Memphis is the one in Egypt or the one in Tennessee, USA?



In India, we have our own Udaipurs. One is in Rajasthan, one in Himachal and one in Tripura. All three of these Udaipurs are very famous among tourists. There will be more for sure.


If you thought there is just one Jaipur in India, think again. There is one in Assam too. The latter one is not as big, and not as popular as the one in Rajasthan.

The Austria-Australia meme is a funny one for sure. The Salzburg Airport authority has ever since declared that there is no such counter at the airport. And there never was.
