Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

SIGHTSEEING, AURANGABAD Updated : Feb 3, 2016, 04.31 PM IST

Salim_Ali_bird_sanctuary Also known as the Salim Ali Talab, this is yet another popular attraction of the city. It is located near Delhi gate in the northern part of the city and has been named after the great ornithologist and naturalist Salim Ali. Called the Khizri Talab during the Mughal period, this lake is now maintained by the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation. Located opposite to the Himayat Bagh, this popular tourist location contains a small bird sanctuary near the lake and a beautiful garden. One can enjoy the beauty of nature from close quarters by taking a boat ride on the serene waters. Tourists need to note that boating is permitted only when the lake is full, which is usually in the rainy and winter seasons. The sanctuary here is a haven for bird lovers, photographers and nature lovers, and during the birding season one can enjoy the experience of watching a variety of species of the feathered friends.
Given the unique biodiversity of the region and the rich variety of flora and fauna, efforts are on by environmentalists to close the lake for general public and declare the area as a biodiversity hot spot for the purpose of conservation.
