Located in Gornji Grad, the Mirogoj cemetery is more of an art gallery than a cemetery from the look of it. Designed by famous architect Hermann Bollé in 1876, it is considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Mirogoj looks like a fortress from outside, adorned with arcades, pavilions and tombs. The cemetery ground has been the resting place for people from all religious backgrounds. The lush green interiors of the cemetery are graced by tombs of some of the most famous Croatians along with ordinary citizens. Many famous Croatian writers, poets, nobles and political leaders have been buried here. The tombs decorated in various sizes, shapes and styles make the cemetery look like an open art gallery. Ivo Kerdić's grave, Matija Ljubek’s grave, Mirko Rački's grave, tombs of the People's Heroes and Monument to the July victims are some of the noteworthy monuments inside the cemetery. Wander around the cemetery and admire the sculptures on the sidewalks. The serenity of the beautifully designed tombs will leave you speechless.
