Located in the canton of Bern, Biel/Bienne might be an industrial town known for its machines and watches, but beauty seems to abound in its churches, vineyards and meadows. French and German are spoken in equal amounts and locals of this metropolis seem to have taken Swiss hospitality to a different level altogether. Once in Biel, the Rolexes, Omegas, Swatches and Tissots can be spotted at every step and so can the charms of the Old Town with its gothic 15th century church, a magnificent town hall and pristine fountains. Located in the Seevorstadt area, the Centre PasquArt also warrants a visit for its graphic art and contemporary sculptures.
If you have more time in hand, Biel/Bienne serves as the starting point for excursions to the three Jura Lakes of Murten, Neuchatel and Biel and draws crowds for the same reason. There are vineyards and museums of viticulture if you are a bit of a wine connoisseur, and for all of the adventurous souls, there is an intimidating gorge by the name of Taubenlochschlucht just outside the city. If in case you can’t make it, cruise down the Aare river and let the wind play with your hair.
A 35 min train from Bern along the S-Bahn will get you to Biel/Bienne. Tickets should come for anything around 16 CHF.
