Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari Church and convent is a Gothic structure in the San Polo district that houses a Renaissance museum. The façade features elaborate portals, pointy spires and both oval and narrow windows. Inside are many masterpieces and art works by Titian, Giovanni Bellini, Alvise Vivarini, Donatello and numerous other artists.
Titian’s masterpieces are the main attraction of dei Frari Church, and the maestro himself is buried here. Take a close look at Pesaro Madonna, which is a revolutionary masterpiece, while the Virgin’s Assumption altarpiece is the most spectacular. The Statue of Saint John the Baptist is the only contribution of Donatello to Venice.
Besides these masterpieces, you’ll find that the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari Church is a treasure chest stuffed with marvelous works of art and well worth the 3 EUR admission fee. Even if architecture and art aren’t among your interests, experiencing the views of Venice from the city’s second tallest tower makes it worthwhile visiting Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
