Pak Ou Caves are located where rivers Ou and Mekong meet at Ban Pak Ou, 25 kilometres north of Luang Prabang. These ancient caves are lined with thousands of Buddha statues, images and icons. The caves situated in the limestone cliff have been a pilgrimage site for the locals for centuries; they are known to leave behind a Buddha statue after making a journey through the river. The statues have been adding up and it is a unique experience to see the crevices filled with the offerings of devotees. There are two caves: in the lower cave close to the water you can spot Buddha statues against a river backdrop, whereas the upper cave is pitch dark and will require a light source to negotiate the dark passage. The best way is to arrive by road and return to Luang Prabang by boat, completing a river ride experience along the way.
