Exploring Altstadt in a tram – tram is very popular mode of transportation in Zürich, and there are more than 300 tram cars operating across the city. The trams have been the backbone of public transport in the city since the 1880s. Initially, trams were horse drawn carriages which were later replaced by electric tramway. The Old Town (Altstadt) can be best negotiated by foot or by trams. The tram route stops at every 300 m. The tram stops display tram line and time schedules which as everything Swiss, function quite accurately. ZürichCARD and Swiss Travel Pass can be used to travel around freely with trams. It is a great experience to get on board these slow moving transport systems, and watch the city pass you by.
