Easily the most loved temple in Japan, Kiyomizu-Dera is as virginal as its name which roughly translates into the ‘Pure Water Temple’. Established in 780, the shrine is associated with the Kita Hosso sect of Japanese Buddhism and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site considering its intricate structure and design. With exceptional views of maple trees and cherry blossoms, Kiyomizu-Dera is a tryst with both nature and spirituality, in equal measures. It’s revered thousand armed and eleven faced Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, attracts devout locals and inquisitive travellers from all over the globe. Another popular feature of the temple is its wooden stage that gracefully rises 13 m above the hillside and provides arresting views of the swarm of Sakura trees, especially during spring.

Standing right behind Kiyiomizu-Dera is the Jishu Shrine dedicated to the deity of matchmaking and many wanderers tread between its stone paths in the quest for love. Also home to the Okunoin and Zuigudo Halls along with the three-storyed Koyasu Pagoda, Kiyomizu-Dera is a must visit in Kyoto. And once you’re done with the temple hopping, do not forget to drink some holy water from the Otowa Waterfall for success and longevity.
