Take a closer look – Neus Rathaus or the New Town Hall lines the central square of Marienplatz. The new town hall was built in 1867 to accommodate the growing number of government offices. The iconic building of Neus Rathaus is one of the most recognized landmarks of Munich. Constructed during late 19th century, this gothic edifice dominates the Marienplatz with its 79 m tall tower. The facade facing the main square is richly decorated with stone ornamentations, stained glass windows, and intricately carved columns. The highlight of Neus Rathaus is the world-famous "Glockenspiel," where Bavarian costume drama is unravelled daily by near life size figures depicting stories of the wedding of Duke William V and Renata of Lorraine. While the complex exterior and labyrinthine architecture of the New Town Hall is worth admiring, the crowning glory is the visit to the observation deck situated at 85 m in the main tower building. The stunning views of the Marienplatz, old town of Munich, and surrounding vistas with the Alps in the distance will leave you in awe.
