Although there is nothing to really do on the Spanish Steps, other than to admire their architecture, have a seat and chat with friends, they are one of the major attractions in Rome. Built between 1723-1725 they were built to link the Trinita dei Monti Church with the Spanish square. What enticed people to come here at the beginning was the artists and painters that often used the steps as inspiration. Beautiful women began flocking to the steps hoping to be used as models for the artists, and soon enough, both travellers and locals began to see the beauty. A total of 138 steps make up the Spanish Steps, and perhaps the best time to visit is during the month of May when they get decorated with pink azaleas. Don’t try eating on these steps though, as in order to keep the area clean, eating has been banned. All around the steps are high-end fashion boutiques and luxury hotels, making this one of the most sought after areas in Rome.
