The Japanese wreck is a small wreck located in a quiet bay, south east of Amed, and surrounded by a gorgeous coral garden. The wreck lies at a depth of 6 to 12 m in sand that can be easily stirred if too many people are diving in the same spot. Very little is known about the wreck and how it ended in the area. It is thought to be a Japanese ship because of the nearly intact Asian-style toilet found in the wreck, which has made people assume it to be from Japan. It can be reached directly from the shore via a short swim to the buoy that marks the wreck’s presence. The ship is actually quite small, but the large propeller is still attached and there is a lot of marine growth on that. The sea floor in this area is either sand or covered with black coral, sponges and gorgonian sea fans. Sightings include a huge variety of tropical fish as well as seahorses, tuna and turtles. The site can be dived all year round but is at its best in the dry season.
