Peppered with medieval-era cathedrals and chapels, and beautiful canals criss-crossing through the city, Ghent ranks quite at the top when it comes to counting the places to visit in Belgium.
As you decide to ditch the cabs and trams, and set on exploring the marvellous city of Ghent on foot, you’d realise very early that the city is laden with landmarks at every corner, and almost every guild house and structure here has some history attached to it. Beautifully perched on the River Lieve, the castle of Gravensteen is a sight to behold. Stunning cathedrals and towers here include the belfry, St. Nicholas’ Church, St. Michael’s Church and St. Bavo’s Cathedral. Do not miss out on visiting the Town Hall, which is a stunning amalgamation of Gothic and Renaissance style of architecture and stitches these two patterns together beautifully. Step inside a boat from the many piers the city has spread across various stopovers, and sail on the calm waters of the canals here that take you through the meandering waterways of the city. On waters, and on foot, the city of Ghent is definitely amongst one of Flanders’ most charming towns and you must spend at least two days here to take in interesting surprises the city has to offer.
