If you want to move away from the oft-visited beaches of Goa to experience its history and culture, visit Panaji, the capital city of Goa. Part of the Tiswadi Taluka of north Goa district, the city is located on an island that is bound by River Mandovi in the north and River Zuari in the south, and offers an eclectic mix of temples, churches, heritage buildings and walks. Panaji is the city for art lovers; it literally breathes art. What with its multitude of architectural marvels and colourful neighbourhoods, that legacy seems to have inspired a formidable number of people either pursuing a related profession, pursuing some form of art as a hobby or importantly, supporting the various expressions that influence everyday life here. So, make sure to explore its rich art galleries and equally tasteful cafeterias. Depending on the length of your vacation, Panaji makes for an excellent stay from a few days to few weeks. The city lends itself naturally for long walks, which is really the best way to explore this city. However, Goa offers bikes on rent too. Panaji is also excellently connected by local buses.
