Though a little far from Delhi, it’s a heaven for bird watchers. Located in the Terai of the Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh, Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 400.6 sq km. The Terai ecosystem comprises sal and teak forests, grasslands, swamps and wetlands, and these varied habitat options attract a large number of birds. While the crested serpent eagle, oriental pied hornbill, shikra and falcon can be seen in the woodland; grey-headed fish eagle, kingfisher, whistling teal, darter and storks can be spotted along the Girwa River. Katarniaghat is also home to a number of endangered species, including white-backed and long-billed vultures.
