Himachal is also known as dev-bhumi and near Palampur there are 3 shakti peeths (of the total of 51 shakti peeths in India)—Chamunda Devi, Jwalamukhi and Chintpurni. Chamunda Devi is an ancient temple situated on the banks of the Baner River and is just 10 km from Palampur. The temple is dedicated to goddess Chamundeshwari, one of seven matrikas. Jwalamukhi is dedicated to the fire goddess, worshipped in the form of flames coming out a rock. It is said that the tongue of Goddess Sati fell off here when Lord Vishnu cut her corpse. Chintpurni is situated on one of the highest peaks of the Sola Singhi Range and is dedicated to Chinnamastika Devi.
